One of my greatest goals for 2018 is to stay focused. When I hear the word focus, the first thing that comes to mind is: following, one, course, until, success. FOCUS!
Distraction is a deterrent from focus. It throws us to and fro but never towards it. Distraction can come in many shapes and sizes and I have placed them in 3 categories. 1) Discouragement , 2) Disappointment and 3) De-motivation
Sometimes we can get distracted by discouragement. Whether it be external therefore demonstrated by those around us, either those we consider to be our loved ones or those we may not even know. This is because, sometimes those that love us the most can hurt us the most. Or sometimes we discourage ourselves, when fear of failure begins to cripple us and cause us to lack belief in ourselves and ability. As a result, we begin to feed ourselves with lies like “I can’t do it”, “I’m not good enough” and “what is my purpose on earth”.
Sometimes we can get distracted by disappointment. When things don’t go according to OUR plans. When you don’t get that job even though you know you were qualified for it. When you don’t get into that university even though you got the grades. When you don’t get that grade even though you worked hard for it. Or when you don’t get that wedding ring you were told was coming but never came. Disappointment can prevent you from focusing. Focusing on the ultimate goal.
To all my students, actually to anyone out there who has suffered from the curse of de-motivation, you know how serious it is. It works like a cycle, where you can’t be bothered to do something you need to do in that moment and put it off for next time. However, things begin to pile up as a result of your procrastination and you begin to panic and get stressed out. As a result, you do not have a clear mind to actually focus on the task at hand. I have endured the pain of this reality too many times but not this year Satan! Somebody shout Amen!
Before I go any further, I need to make a quick disclaimer. Don’t interpret lack of focus to be a lack of passion and ambition. It is simply loosing focus and we have to work hard to regain it and maintain it.
We do this by understanding what focus actually is, and that is to follow one course until success. As a result, if you are truly doing this you wouldn’t be discouraged when you fail or face disappointments because the key word “until” demonstrates that it is a process and a journey. Additionally, you wouldn’t be phased by any kind of negativity that surrounds you, because you are “following one course” therefore you won’t have the time or energy to look behind you to find your “haters” because that will slow you down and prolong the process towards success. Finally, demotivation will come sometimes in the form of procrastination and laziness but our focus must activate the awareness that the goal is “success”. So we need to say no to later and yes to now. And do what needs to be done, now.
I believe that my 2018 will be more productive and impactful if I learn to focus on my goals and track my progress. If you agree, like this post.
